How To Write An Article Summary – Three Key Points

An Article Summary Is Easier Than Parenthood

So I was studying up on writing good a good article summary when I received a call from my lovely wife Kimbery.  All I could do was picture her staring up at the ceiling and screaming  out of frustration.  Now I don’t know if you remember your days as an 18 year old kid, I know I do, but some people tend to forget the whole experience.

My oldest son now lives with his grandparents and is currently on break in between high school and college.  The other night he went out to a party, which he doesn’t do often, and of course there was alcohol there.  Now I know when I was his age I was drinking, I am not saying its right or wrong, just saying I did it too.  So I really can’t get that upset with him considering he is 18, he was responsible and safe, while he was out.  A parent can only hope our kids make the best decision and my son has always had a good head on his shoulders.

But the problem comes with his grandparents.  You see he lives with them in California because he likes the ladies there and because he wants to attend school there.  And when he came home from the party late and smelling of alcohol they told him to get out.  I was a bit uncompromising in my opinion, and a missed opportunity to help a young man with a life choice decision, but its their house.

Now being a smart kid my son used his outstanding communication skills to work out the problem with his grandparents and settled them down.  So he gets to stay, go to school, and start his adult life with the learned lesson that he needs to keep his mind straight and focused on school.  Besides there will be plenty of time to party in college!!

I bet your asking, what does this have to do with writing an article summary?

Well its simple really, remember my first paragraph, the one that got you interested in reading the story (hopefully)?  That is the article summary or excerpt for this very post.  So if your on my homepage, you will see it, and it should stir a bit of curiosity with my visitors and get them to check out my article.

That is the true point of content marketing, keeping your readers engaged, and if your writing your article summaries right you will do just that.

3 Keys to Writing A Great Article Summary

1. Don’t Play Cat and Mouse with Your Readers.  Your main point(s) and benefit(s) of the article should be clear to the reader in the summary. Of course you don’t want to give too much away, but don’t rely on the reader’s curiosity. Think taste, not hint, to compel the reader forward. This means the reader has had a taste of the article and wants more, rather than what they imagine the article will be like.  With the article summary of this article I depended solely on curiosity (and I had to correct it) rather than focusing on the key tips I wanted to present.  I wasn’t showing the value of the article.

2. Less I and We, More You and Yours.  Target your reader’s needs and wants with strong benefit-oriented language. Avoid using self-serving information in your summaries, including your name, website, and other blatant self-promotion. Compel the reader in one direction: your article.  A lot of newbie’s get this wrong because they are taught that article marketing is a great way to generate traffic and customers.  So with that, they think that they need to promote the heck out of their site in the summaries.  I know I did it myself all the time and had to break that habit quickly because it doesn’t work at all.  Sell your article, not your stuff.

3. There’s No Time like the Present.  Use present-tense language for a sense of immediacy, use active language to excite the reader, and use stronger, more descriptive language.  Getting your reader to visualize themselves applying the concepts of your article is key here.  I suggest dusting off the old yellow thesaurus that’s been hiding out on your bookshelf for years.  I know that my vocabulary is a bit limited and I use one a lot to help me say the right things in the right way.

Considering the 3 keys above, here’s a me-oriented summary that lacks informative value and uses round-about language:

I’ve been practicing compelling headline’s, what do you think about the whole playful use of pleasure?  Anyway, if you like your looking for things to write about and different ways to present information that will keep your readers not only engaged, but coming back for more.  And that is where article templates come in.

Now I tend to create my own for specific topics that I know I am going to write a lot about, company reviews for instance.  But why recreate everything when someone has already done the work for me right?  Ezinearticles.com, the premier article directory, has created several of these gems that you can use.  I hand picked several myself that I use for my content just to get the juices flowing and the Pleasure Article template is a pretty good one when you looking to write about getting people what they really want.

To identify what is pleasurable for your audience or their pleasure principles, we need to address two simple questions:

One thing I like to do on several of my blogs is write these articles in a series.  That way I know that the people coming to my sites are interested in the topic.  If I get a lot of repeat visitors I know I am covering a topic that is providing some real value to the niche community at the time.  If I don’t see that repeat traffic I research something else and move on from there.

The Pleasure Principles Article Template:

  1. Introduction: Hook the reader in the first 2-3 sentences by succinctly identifying your targeted audience’s needs and wants.
  2. Introduce the pleasure principle.
  3. Describe the benefits of obtaining the pleasure principle: In the next paragraph, provide an overview of the strengths/benefits directly pertaining to the reader achieving this pleasure principle.
  4. Ingredients to acquire pleasure principle: In the following paragraph(s), explain how readers can achieve the pleasure principle with your recommended plan.
  5. Provide an Example: Before closing the article, be sure to give an example or two of how others have achieved this pleasure principle by following your recommended plan.
  6. Conclusion: In the closing paragraph, pull all of the ingredients back together to summarize your pleasure principle plan and provide one last memorable call-to-action.

Achieving pleasure over pain can work wonders! Help your audience find pleasurable solutions to their needs by using this article template to make your next article both memorable and inspiring.

In conclusion, let me give you something to think about.  We as bloggers are fighting a phenomena that is really embedded into the popular culture today.

These days people are looking for the bad in everything.  Just watch the news and you can see it everywhere and everyday.  Breaking news Congressman is a cheat, Breaking news Wall street is stealing, Breaking News Oil companies gouging gas prices (ok that’s probably true).

My point is, we as responsible bloggers and writers of totally awesome and inspiring content need to keep in mind that our audience has been conditioned to look for the negative in everything that they see or read.

So when you are writing these pleasure articles keep that in mind and don’t make overly outlandish claims, don’t expand so much that you sound untrustworthy.  Trust me, its really easy to do and once you lose your audience’s trust you won’t be able to get it back no matter how hard you try.

Why You Should Write A How To Article

I know you have seen them since you started promoting your network marketing business online, tons and tons of articles and posts on all manner of topics include the ole faithful how to article.  Why do I say ole faithful when I refer to the how to article, well I am glad you asked.

You see over the course of doing marketing online you pick up a few tips and tricks here and there that help you make more money.  And I don’t know if you noticed but internet marketers love to tell people how much money they could make if they only did this one thing.  “Fire Up This Special Software And Money Will Flow From PayPal On AutoPilot” remember that one, bet if you searched for that in Google you would get tons of results.

Well all of those money “making” sites are all powered by a how to article.  You see people on the internet want their problems solved.  They want to lose weight, they want to get rich, they want to learn how to cook cheesecake and the how to article template is how you get them to  your site.  You identify a problem then write a how to article that addressses the problem and then presents a solution.

You can use the how to article for any niche you can image, it is by far the most versatile and effective article around.  Don’t believe me, do a Google search on “how to take digital photographs” or “how to tie a slipknot” bet you find something.  Also do some keyword research and see if your how to article is targeting an issue many people are having.  I bet you will be surpised by the results.

How do you demystify your reader’s objections and uncover the real truth in your niche?

Objections are by their very nature a given in the network marketing lead generation world both online and offline. But by using an article template you can proactively get ahead of those objections on your blog even before the opt-in of your prospective prospect.

Conclusion: Conclude your objections article by following by reminding people that it’s okay to have believed the falsehood, as many people do, but now they know the truth and should now act on that knowledge.

Walking through these steps will make it infinitely easier to write a high-quality article in no time and help ease readers away from false notions of your niche!

Article Marketing After Google Updates

Google Panda Didn’t Completely Kill Article Marketing But It’s On Life Support.

Article marketing is a tried and tested method of generating links and ultimately its great to generate leads.  In order to employ this tactic all you need to do is find a topic, write an article about it that includes a link or two, and publish it on several article directories. Or, more accurately, you pay someone else to do all that for you and just provide the link destination and anchor text.

And up until recently article marketing worked and it worked very well. Because it got results for relatively little cost there were many proponents of the strategy.

The problem is, article marketing has lost much of its potency due to the Panda update.  When Google’s change began targeting low quality content sites, in one stroke wiped most article directories from the SERPs and has robbed them of nearly all of the link juice they used to pass on.

This was not unexpected, or unfair to article marketers. Because the vast majority of content published on article directories was indeed low quality.  This low quality content had no other purpose than to generate long tail traffic for the directories and links for the content writers. It certainly didn’t aim to fulfil user’s informational needs in all cases, and so its disappearance from SERPs was actually praised by many.

What it means now is that marketers that have been using article marketing as part of their linkbuilding activities will need to find a new channel to generate easy and keyword-rich links.

So what does this all mean?  Well its simple really, it means that you need to change how you submit your articles to the directories.  And more importantly which ones you choose to submit them to.  You need a plan that optimizes the content that you have created in such a way that allows it to be repurposed in a small number of high quality sites rather than thousand of low quality ones.

The Whole World of SEO Is Asking the Same Question: Massive or Individual Article Marketing?

article marketingTo make a wise decision about article marketing I would like to point out the advantages and disadvantages of massive article marketing submissions vs individual publications.

(1) Massive Content Blasts

Advantages: The biggest advantage is that you invest less time and get more backlinks.

For example, you can write one article and blast it to 50 directories . So, you submitted an article and got 50 publications with your backlinks inside. This is a lot of backlinks.

And a lot of backlinks means that you can get better ranks for your keywords within quite a short period of time.

I can tell you that the vast majority of SEO providers, companies and services are selling massive submissions. You can easily impress a client with a big number of backlinks, a frugal price and a good boost in ranks.

Disadvantages: Google knows that content blasts have become its weak point, and Google Panda update is just the beginning.

Google understands that content blasts are its weak point. Because when the links that are inside the content that are published on sites with different IPs, site owners, different age and history of the site – this looks pretty natural to Google.  This resulted in its reputation measuring algorithm being manipulated.

Google Panda update started to focus on this but clipping the results of your massive blasts. For example, you blasted an article to 50 blogs and on the initial stage you get very nice results. But over time Google will chop down all these 50 articles into a smaller number. Which means that the number of backlinks you have in the end gets smaller as well. And you can lose position in the search engines.

Google isn’t super good at clipping the results of massive submissions at the moment. But their approach to taking care of this issue is smart and correct. Now that they saw great results from Google Panda update about massive submissions, they will focus even more efforts on this approach. It will take time, but strategically the effect from massive submissions will decline more and more.

(2) Individual Publications on Trusted Sites

Advantages: maximum SEO safety, long-term article marketing results and direct traffic.

You can use this approach even for the sites that are just 1 day old, without getting into the SEO spam scan from Google. This is the safest approach one can use right now.

The SEO quality of this type of backlinks is tremendous, because you are choosing the sites with reputation, age and trust. 2-3 backlinks from the site of this level will be of a much higher value, compared to hundreds of backlinks from the sites that have nearly no reputation in the eyes of Google.

Finally, you get direct traffic from your articles, not just the backlinks. Because your they are posted on quality sites they are bringing in more traffic then they would if they were posted on lower quality directories. If you write interesting content, you will get direct visitors from these sites to your site. Because these sites have traffic and your article on this site will get traffic as well.

Disadvantages: more work (yeah I know you hate work lol), takes longer to see the results.

Obviously it takes time and effort to submit one great article to one great site, then another great article to another site, etc. That is why you will not get hundreds and/or thousands of backlinks overnight.

And, on the first stage, the results of rank improvement aren’t that impressive. It can take up to  several weeks of hard work with creation and publication of articles on trusted sites before you can see the ranking improvement.

What Article Marketing Choice is Better?

I believe, and many other SEO specialists will agree,  that massive submissions are on a sliding trend in SEO.

They still currently work but not as good as they used to, but they still give results.  Sometimes – very impressive results.

SEO providers still love using them because they give quick results and the price is expensive. And it means that whenever you come to a SEO company that has a big portfolio of different strategies, they will do their best to convince you that massive submissions are cool.

There area a lot of service providers in the SEO market who are not ready yet to get away from article marketing massive submissions because other strategies need more resources.  That is why you will not often hear about other strategies that need more time and effort, because SEO companies do not want to lose potential clients in this economy.

However…

Despite all the above mentioned, the market is changing right now.

If we take into account the famous Google Panda update with their clipping of backlinks from massive submissions, and that Google will not stop on this – then the strategy of individual publications becomes a realistic way out for SEO providers and people who want to push their sites high in ranks.

Should We Quit Massive Submissions?

In the short-term scope, no. Massive content submissions are still working.   But it is absolutely critical that you get used to the new type of SEO.  SEO where quality matters more than numbers.  When you are looking not only on the PageRank of the site, but also on the traffic and visitors that this site is getting.  SEO that is actually very close to media marketing.

As with every new trend, it will take some time to get used to this new model.  But after you get used to it, after you see the results, after you understand how safe and natural it is – you will agree that this approach is the best you can use for your sites and for the sites of your team.

Think about the future of your SEO today.  Before the market has changed so critically that your article marketing falls out from it.

There are a large amount of people doing small business internet marketing who run some unprofitable websites or internet businesses with no short or long term strategies. Some people do not have any goals, while some seem to jump from one make money online ’business opportunity‘ to another.

However, to make this strategy successful and cost effective for your business, you must educate yourself about keyword selection and bidding for your keywords.  If you don’t take the time to properly learn PPC, it can become the fastest way to loosing a lot of money.

3) Start Your Own Ezine

This is most likely the most powerful marketing technique on the internet.  Having your own list of subscribers to send a newsletter to on a regular basis is a powerful way of expanding your business.  In order to effectively use this method however, you are going to have to be able to provide a consistent amount of quality information.  The easiest way to accomplish this is by getting people in you market to write for you.  There are tons of people out there who would love the opportunity to write about any subject you can think of, its only a matter of seeking them out.

4) Viral Marketing

Another very popular and effective marketing strategy for your business. You can give ‘stuff’ away that people can use and put links to your web site in it.

Information is a powerful tool in marketing. Give people rights to share the ‘stuff’ with their friends and email lists.  In the long term, this will build a lot of traffic to your website.  This information can be in the form of an ebook, a video series, your imagination really is the limit.  These days a lot of marketers are creating applications for the iPhone and other smartphones.  For a relatively small investment whose to say you can’t do the same, thus driving traffic to your offers or your list.

5) Linking

One way or reciprocal linking is critical to your online success. This tactic takes time to develop, but it is well worth your effort. Search engines assess the importance of your web site by the number of incoming links pointing to your site. You can build one way links by articles writing and submitting and also participating in relevant forums etc.  You can also do blog commenting on high PR blogs in your niche, this passes on a backlink to your site.  Just remember, don’t fall into the trap of using some software to cheat the system.  No, Google isn’t everywhere, but eventually the spider will catch on and your ranking will pay the price for it.

6) Search Engine Optimization

This is another long term marketing tactic for your business. Your pages must be fully optimized for the search engines.
