Keyword Research – A Starting Point

Everyone Needs To Do Keyword Research

I have actually been writing my keyword research posts in response to issues that I have seen. Or even better from questions I have received from my readers. Which is pretty cool because these days I am never lacking for content ideas and I want to thank all of you for that.

But I do owe you an apology. You see I have actually been putting the cart before the horse and writing content on keyword research in a backwards sort of way. So now I need to correct that and give you a starting point for your keyword research.

Why Is Keyword Research Important?

First I need to let you know that if you don’t do keyword research and you hap-hazardly post content to your blog your going to get traffic. By the very nature of the internet someone is going to come to your blog. The problem is that those people won’t be the people your looking for.

Sure, some that come will like your content and some may even buy what your selling or sign up to your list. But that will be the exception rather than the rule. Completing the proper keyword research will solve that problem for you and to tell you the truth it doesn’t really take all that long to get completed.

You see the real point of doing keyword research is to help you guide the search engines in such a way as to tell them what kind of people your looking for to see your content, relevancy. You don’t want to be posting to your blog everyday about a subject that has little to no interest on the net. Or that interest is so obscure nobody cares.

Likewise you don’t want to be doing posts about ‘weight loss’ either. That particular term is so hard to get ranked on the internet you will be looking at investing a year or more just to get onto the first page of Google. And that is a very forgiving estimate. I’ve been doing keyword research SEO for quite a while and to tell you the truth I doubt I could do it without a significant investment in time and money.

So lets get going and give you the keyword research information your looking for what do you say?

Step 1 of Keyword Research: Identify Your Niche

This step of keyword research may actually already be taken care of for you if your a network marketer trying to promote you company on the internet. But you need to apply attraction marketing to your business because of limitations in how you promote or because your company website leaves something to be desired.

But if you don’t have a company yet this is where you start with your keyword research.

A niche is simple the topic that your going to cover in your keyword research. Red Rider BB Guns, coin collecting, racing motorcycles, car care they are all potential niche’s on the internet. Some make money, others are simply a group of people getting together to share their passion for a particular subject.

Some niche’s are considered evergreen which simple means they address problems of situations people have always had and will always have. These evergreen niche’s are very competitive because they are very lucrative. This isn’t to say that you can’t target them, you just have to be a little inventive to get a foothold.

These evergreen niche’s include:

Weightloss
Baldness
Credit problems
Dating
Divorce
Avoiding foreclosure
Make more money
People looking for status symbols on the cheap
Gamblers
Pet problems
Investors
People with bad body odor
People with acne

Now chances are if your a network marketer doing some keyword research your company addresses one or more of these issues with its product and business model so you have a good starting point. For the purpose of the rest of this article I am going to tackle the weightloss niche just for the fun of it.

Step 2 of Keyword Research: Broad Keywords Breakdown

Weightloss itself is considered a broad keyword research term because there are so many things that can fall under this topic. The problem that new marketers find is that they do tons of posts and content targeting this particular keyword with no results because its so competitive.

So what we need to do is break down your keyword research a bit into more managable areas. What I mean is we need to figure out if we are selling a weightloss product what problem does it solve? Are we selling a product? Are we selling a service? Are we not selling anything at all but providing a place to promote ourselves as an expert? These questions drive whether your looking for buyer keywords or traffic keywords.

Buyer keywords are just that, keywords that bring in buyers of your product or service. They are very specific to the point that they don’t bring you a lot of traffic. The bonus is that because they are so specific they convert to sales better. Thus increasing your bottom line which is always good.

Traffic keywords on the other hand are more vague. This is also intentional because you want to bring more people to your website everyday. They can potentially bring you thousands of visitors a day to your site. The problem is that all this traffic may or may not be buyers so your conversions on sales will be less. Its not nessarrily a bad thing though because your getting more exposure to your site and increasing your brand recognition at the same time.

Lets assume that you have a product to sell and your want to increase your traffic as a whole at the same time. With that being said we are going to create a mix of both buyer and traffic keywords in order to focus your efforts.

Step 3 of Keyword Research: Keyword Modifiers

When you first started marketing on the internet and doing keyword research you no doubt heard a little bit about long tail keywords. Keyword modifiers are simply the additions that you put in front of or behind your original keyword in order to create those long tail words.

For example, lets look at our weight loss niche and some potential long tail keywords that we can create with the term ‘bodyfat.’ Now this particular keyword has some pretty high competition and maybe one day we can rank for it, but for now lets focus on some keywords that may or may not have some potential.

How to loose bodyfat
How to measure bodyfat
How to get rid of bodyfat
How to raise bodyfat (yep some people need more cushion)

These are some examples of long tail keywords for your keyword research. It just so happens they also solve a problem so if your selling a weightloss product they could have some potential.

Step 4 of Keyword Research: Determine Traffic

Ok this part of keyword research is a bit subjective because the tool we are going to use doesn’t exactly tell us how much traffic a site in the number one spot is going to get. But its close enough to help us make a decision.

The Google Adwords Keyword tool has a feature in it that projects the amount of searches a particular keyword will get both Globally and Locally based on your Geo-Location. Take that number and figure that if your site was ranked number one you could potentially capture 45% of that traffic. This is very subjective of course and by no means an exact science of keyword research but it will give you a good place to start.

Also, after you plug in your potential keyword take note of the recommendations. There may be some gems in there that you didn’t think of before. And please ignore the competition coloum. Its for Adwords PPC not SEO. The only thing it could be good for is to help determine if your looking at a buyer’s keyword. The higher the competition the more likely your looking at a buyer keyword.

Step 5 of Keyword Research is determining competition and I actually already covered it in my last post so move there if you havn’t read it yet to get some keyword research continuity. Of course I need to do some keyword research deep dive stuff to better illustrate on how to get keyword research done and some cool guy keyword research tools that are free or paid to help you out and make your keyword research easier and fun.

What I don’t want to do is overwhelm you with information so do your keyword research up to this point and we can move on later.

Excellent tips on keyword research Clint.

My goal is to find “buying intent” keywords. Not always easy but well worth it when I do.

Clint,
you have me thinking on how much time to I really put in for SEO. I use to create sites in the old days when we had to have key words and other locators. Now, it is simple that you can utilize Google to preform much of the task.

It is not that difficult to write about your passion. Then complete your key word search to see how much you need to tweak. We over do lots of the easy methods based on so many guru’s claim different methods are best. Just keeping it simple and use what ever works for you is best.

Clint, I must say you made a far detailed procedure simple. You had us walk through each step and not over complicate them. There are so many things one will get caughtup with and miss the end result of just writing a subject matter related to your business. It is all about usable content.

I have always choosen to empower others with experiences. This covers my writing and style. My key words are something I match after being inspired to write. Kind of backwards but it does work and has been for many years. Hey, if it works for me and gets my numbers of helping to empower others is my only target. The monitary gain is not from who visits my blog and reads my articles. Sharing my passions and generating revenue from doing so, is how it is done. Then I simply so others how to do the same. Share their passions and generate revenue for sharing.

Clint, your one of our great visionaries and mentors. I look forward to your next amazing article. You have a gift that I appreciate in sharing complex information simply.
